The GRE is a hurdle that you must cross to gain admission to a majority of graduate programs in the United States. Why do U.S. programs require the GRE? Graduate admissions officers review applications from a very broad range of backgrounds. The GRE provides a uniform benchmark of applicants' abilities across this very diverse range backgrounds. In addition to the GRE, many graduate programs also require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and/or the Test of Spoken English (TSE) from applicants whose previous degrees are from institutions where the language of instruction is not English. Often, graduate students perform teaching assistantship duties for which spoken and written English skills are extremely important.

If you are applying to a program which supports graduate students on teaching assistantships, then we particularly recommend that you consider taking the TSE. The TSE is expensive and is not offered as widely as the TOEFL, but the information that it provides on spoken English skills is very highly valued by many graduate programs.
